Western Sicily – The birthplace of Marsala wine
In this tour, we will explore the western coast of Sicily, the area where the famous Marsala wine is born. However, other than this delicacy, this region has much more to offer, and will surprise you with antique locations and stunning views. It is a perfect example of the island’s diversity: from the lush and colourful natural landscapes, to the authentic traces of an immense historical past, without forgetting the unique gastronomical specialties of this territory.
Day 1: Arrival in Palermo – Marsala Area
You can land in the Palermo airport as well as in the Trapani one. We will pick you up and take you to the hotel, in the area of Marsala or Trapani. Dinner in the hotel and overnight stay.
Day 2: Selinunte
Today we will dive into the past and visit Selinunte: the biggest archaeological park in all Europe, with its area of 270 hectares (667 acres) and 7 Greek temples, most of which are very well-preserved. In order not to tire us out, we will travel through the huge park with the touristic train, and will be able to focus on the beauty and peculiarity of this archaeological site by the sea.
After this impressive blast to the past, we will drive towards the sea, stopping in small towns as Marinella di Selinunte, where we can find many restaurants that will tempt you with their fresh seafood menus and other delicacies.
Then, we will head back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Erice – Trapani Salt ponds – Marsala wine-tasting experience
After our breakfast, we will reach Erice, a beautiful medieval town located in a spectacular position on top of mount Erice, 750m of altitude (2460ft). Here, you will feel like time has stopped.
We will then head to the coast, crossing panoramic roads. We will see the salt evaporation ponds around Trapani, with their characteristic windmills and mountains of accumulated salt.
Then, we will go to Marsala, the port town from where its sweet, dense wine takes its name. A wine-tasting experience is a must, so we will stop in a cellar and savour this nectar of the Gods.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Scopello – San Vito lo Capo
Today we will bring you in a very special place. First, we will reach Scopello, a small seaside town located near beautiful rock formations in the sea. Here you will find idyllic beaches and a deep-blue sea.
If you wish, you can start a two-hour hike crossing the Zingaro Natural Reserve, and reach the town of San Vito lo Capo. There, you will feel like being at the Southern seas: miles and miles of white sand, surrounded by rocky cliffs. We will take a long break here, and enjoy the beach.
In the late afternoon, we will relax with an aperitivo, and then we will go to an agritourism or restaurant for an evocative dinner, where the traditional Cous Cous is a must-have.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Aegadian Islands
This day we will focus on a spectacular natural beauty: the Aegadian Islands archipelago. We will board the ferry from the Trapani harbour to reach the island of Favignana. Here, the sea shines with all the possible shades of blue: from deep blue to clear turquoise colour. In addition to the spectacular landscape, the biggest island of the archipelago has many attractions to offer: the tonnara (the facility where freshly-caught tunas were processed) and the Florio building, seat of the town hall. We will enjoy the atmosphere of this special place, and take a swim in the sea if the weather allows it.
Our next step is Levanzo, the smallest island of the archipelago. This island has a peculiarity – it has no streets. Silence reigns supreme, and you can spend hours enjoying the soothing absence of modern cacophony.
With a last seaside aperitivo, we enjoy the landscape once again before taking the ferry back to Trapani.
Dinner at the hotel and overnight stay.
