Jeep excursion to the Madonna dell’Alto Sanctuary
This truly charming excursion will take you to the Madonna dell’Alto Sanctuary, entitled to the Virgin Mary, built on top of one of the highest peaks of the Madonie Natural Park, the UNESCO Geopark located in the mountains of the province of Palermo.
Initial meeting in Petralia Sottana at 9:45 AM. From there, we will get in the Jeeps that in about one hour of travel will take us to the Madonna dell’Alto Sanctuary, at 2000m (6561ft) of altitude. We will cross the woods, spotting the fauna that lives here totally undisturbed, in the quiet mountains, far from the man. We will be able to admire colorful butterflies and bumblebees chasing each other, swirling in the air. With a little luck, we could be able to spot packs of fawns hopping from stone to stone.
You will find a reward waiting for you, upon your arrival at the Sanctuary: the landscape that extends at your feet. Literally the entirety of Sicily, obviously including the immense Etna volcano. Enveloped by silence and by the mystical aura of the Sanctuary, we will have a picnic with regional delicacies, that will end with a local dessert – the sfoglio, a cake with a delicious filling primarily made with fresh cheese, candied pumpkin and cinnamon.
In the afternoon we will descend back to Petralia Sottana.
