Sicily, the island of oranges
Orange – the colour of life and light
The land where oranges bloom!
Oranges grow and ripen in the south, and are later distributed to the rest of the country. In this tour, we will visit their region of origin.
In order to see the oranges on the trees, you should travel to Sicily with us between November and February. During this period, the golden-coloured fruits are picked daily, and the contrast between the black volcanic soil, the bright green leaves and the orange colour of the fruits is truly a marvel of nature.
Day 1: Arrival – Catania
You can reach Catania with your preferred flight. We will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel in the Catania area. Along the way, we will already cross the orange orchards. Dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 2: Visit to an orange orchard
After a rich breakfast, we will begin our day with a visit to an orange orchard. Here, you will find thousands of wonderful fruits on the trees, and you will be surrounded by the richness of a unique landscape shaped by the Etna volcano. The aroma and the taste of a freshly-picked orange is simply unforgettable, and you will treasure it forever.
After a fantastic lunch of Sicilian delicacies, we will head to Catania. Here, we will experience the lively and beautiful historical centre, visit the Cathedral and the famous fish market. While taking a stroll through the streets, you will have the possibility to purchase Sicilian specialities and local products. Catania is a tourist attraction, but the authentic Sicilian way of life is still firmly established. In the late afternoon, we will return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Black and White – Etna and Taormina
After our breakfast, we will start our special day – we will visit the Etna volcano, but not by taking the ordinary, crowded touristic path of the Southern peak. We will instead follow the more fascinating and quiet North path. Our route will unfold between the small towns built in volcanic stone, and along the way we will see volcanic ash accumulated by the sides of the street, like piled snow. We will be able to distinguish clearly the different areas of vegetation, while climbing higher and higher. In this period of the year, there is also the very-likely possibility of finding the Etna covered in snow. So, black ash in contrast with white snow.
In our first step, we will visit a cave carved into the volcanic rock, that the Arabs used to produce ice. Just a few kilometres further, we will stop at the Sartorius Mountains, where we will take a small trip to closely observe this unique landscape.
Later, hungry, we will go to Linguaglossa, where lunch awaits us in the “Wunderbar”. In the afternoon, we will visit the locations of The Godfather movies. We will stop at Castello degli Schiavi (the godfather’s villa) and re-experience the original sets of the legendary trilogy. A blast in the past…
After that, we will continue towards Taormina, the idyllic city placed on top of a cliff in front of the coast, with a breath-taking view. Here, you will have plenty of time to relax and explore the place. Many shops offer regional products, but here you will also find the great Italian brands. There are also many welcoming restaurants and bar, if you would like to have a traditional Italian aperitivo. Obviously, if you wish, you can also visit the Greek Theatre.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Returning home
If we have enough time before your flight, we will have a brief excursion along the Coast of the Cyclops. We will show you the spot where Polyphemus threw the boulders at Odysseus’ ship.
The black rocks rise from the crystal-clear water and offer a picturesque landscape. We will stop at Acicastello and show you a castle built on the rocks that emerge directly from the sea.
We will take you to the airport and you will be able to keep the memories of these days in Sicily for the rest of your life.
